Alessandra Donati’s area of practice is Art market legislation and cultural heritage law. She regularly assists artists, gallerists, collectors, auction houses, artists' archives, restorers, private museums and cultural institutions in all matters related to the art market and the art world: from contracting to issues related to authenticity and provenance of works of art, copyright protection, advice to Artists' Archives, management, sale and lending of works of art and collections, restoration, transportation, insurance, etc.
She is an accredited expert of the Foundation School of Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Ministry of Culture for the macro-area: Law of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
She is Arbitrator of the Arbitration Chamber of Venice in matters of Art.
She is President of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Association of Artist Archives.
She is Professor of Comparative Private Law at the Milano-Bicocca University, and Professor of Art Law at the Master in Contemporary Art Markets at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti of Milano.
She is director of the Master in “Registrar Profession” of the Galli Academy - IED - of Como and director of the course for Artist’s Archive Curator of the Italian Association of Artist’s Archives (AitArt).
She is director of the study series Comparative Art Law (ESI) and a member of the Editorial Board of the International Review Art and Law, Brill Research Perspectives Publisher, of the Journal Arte e Diritto, (ed. Giuffré) and of SCIAMI (magazine for performing arts, video and sound).
She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Centre of Research on Cultural Artistic Heritage of Milano Bicocca University (Bi-Pac) and of the Board of Careof, a non-profit organisation for contemporary art research and of the Art Law and Literature Commission of the Milan Bar Association.
She is a member of the Board of Professors of the Doctoral Program in Intangible Heritage at Milano-Bicocca University.
In 2015 she was announced winner of the international award "Jacques Derrida / Law and Culture’ International Chair of Philosophy”.
She oversaw the drafting of the PACTA (Protocolli per l’Autenticità la Cura e la Tutela dell’opera d’Arte contemporanea) adopted by the MIBACT in July 2017 as a new tool for authentication of contemporary works.
She is a member of the Art Law Foundation of Geneva, SIRD, the Italian Association of Comparative Law, the Association for Filippo de Pisis, ICOM and IGIIC.
